Instead of being confined to making the 2D space more efficent by adding things like better task managers and window sorting mechanisms a whole other approach has been taken. It's not an immersive 3D enviroment (which the title of it may lead you to believe), but it uses some 3D elements. One of the founders dubbed it 2 1/2D and I think that's the best way of summing it up. So in short there's no competition between lg3d or projects like Xgl and compiz. Thoes take what we have today and make it better, we're playing around with things we hope will come in the future.<br /><br />Things like being able to stack things on the side of the screen when you don't need them and being able to just mouse over them for a quick peek, or flipping a window around to scribble a note on the back of it. Things that mimic how we use items in the physical word.
